AdBlue off: SCR software solution for trucks and cars
When the pump, injector, NOx sensors or AdBlue tank heaters fail, the vehicle goes into countdown and start inhibit. On ECUs that allow it we disable SCR management: no countdown, no power limitation, DTCs removed and checksum corrected.
What the AdBlue / SCR system is
AdBlue® is a 32.5% urea solution in demineralised water. The SCR (Selective Catalytic Reduction) system injects it into the exhaust upstream of a dedicated catalyst: the urea turns into ammonia, which reduces nitrogen oxides (NOx) to nitrogen and water vapour. It needs a heated tank, pump, dosing module, injector, an upstream and a downstream NOx sensor, temperature and quality sensors. Everything is monitored by the engine ECU or by a dedicated DCU .
By law the strategy is inducement: if the system does not dose correctly, the vehicle warns, then reduces torque, then prevents restarting after a number of kilometres or starts. A €300-700 NOx sensor or a crystallised pump can stop a truck on delivery.
Typical faults and fault codes
| Fault / symptom | Common DTCs | Effect on the vehicle |
|---|---|---|
| Upstream or downstream NOx sensor in error | P20EE, P2200, P2201, P2202, P229F, P22A0 | SCR light, catalyst efficiency cannot be verified, countdown starts |
| Crystallised AdBlue injector or pump | P204F, P2047, P2048, P20A0 | No dosing: torque reduction, then start inhibit |
| Frozen tank or faulty heater | P20B9, P20BA, P20BD | No dosing below -11 °C; warning light in winter |
| Level or quality sensor in error | P203F, P204B, P20E8, P20E9 | “AdBlue not compliant” message, countdown |
| “Engine start not possible in X km” message and limited power | P1CAD, P20EE + active inducement | Final inducement stage: the vehicle is about to stop |
What we do on the ECU
- Reading the original file with a master tool (OBD, bench or boot), backup delivered to the customer.
- SCR management deactivation in the engine ECU and, where present, in the DCU: dosing, catalyst efficiency model, NOx sensor tests.
- Inducement deactivation: no countdown, no power limitation, no start inhibit.
- DTCs removed for all system components (NOx sensors, pump, injector, heaters, level and quality).
- Checksum corrected, writing and a check that the instrument cluster no longer shows warnings.
On heavy vehicles the DCU often has to be handled separately. On many Euro 6 trucks the system is managed by a dedicated control unit (Bosch Denoxtronic, Cummins UREA DCU): working on the engine ECU alone is not enough. We check this on the file before confirming feasibility.
Vehicles and platforms
We work on trucks, buses, agricultural and earthmoving machinery, as well as Euro 6 cars and vans. Platforms: Bosch EDC17 and MD1 (Mercedes, MAN, Iveco, Scania, DAF, VW, BMW…), Delphi DCM (Ford, Volvo, Renault), Cummins CM2250/CM2350, Continental, Denso and Bosch Denoxtronic 2.x DCUs. Feasibility depends on the software version and is confirmed on the read file. Often combined with DPF off and EGR off on the same file.
Where to do it: on site, online or on your own
| Option | Per chi | How it works |
|---|---|---|
| At Powerise | Private customers, fleets and workshops able to reach Abruzzo, Italy, or ship the ECU | Reading, modification, writing and on-vehicle checks; or you ship us the ECU |
| Online with TuningBot | Workshops with a master or slave tool, anywhere in the world | Upload the read file, choose the service, get the file back in minutes (checksum correction selectable as a service); pay-per-use from €19.99 |
| On your own with ECUDecoder | Those who work on files every day | Licensed software with USB dongle: the function is applied in one click, checksum included, no cost per file |
Technical and legal note
Use on public roads is governed by the type-approval regulations of your country; solutions are intended for professional, motorsport, off-road and export use. For vehicles operating on public roads in Europe the SCR system must remain functional: responsibility for use remains with the operator.
Frequently asked questions
The vehicle is locked after the countdown: can it still be done?
Yes. With SCR management and inducement disabled in the file, the lock is removed after writing; on some platforms an inducement reset with a diagnostic tool is also needed.
Does the DCU need to be done as well?
On Euro 6 trucks with a dedicated AdBlue control unit, yes: the engine ECU and the DCU communicate and each reports the other’s fault. On cars the system is almost always in the engine ECU.
Can I leave the AdBlue tank empty?
With management disabled, yes: pump and injector are no longer driven or monitored.
Does performance or consumption change?
No: performance maps are not touched. You recover the full torque the inducement had limited.
How much does it cost?
Online on TuningBot the AdBlue off service is pay-per-use, from €19.99 per file; on site the price depends on the vehicle, the presence of a DCU and the reading method.
Truck stopped because of AdBlue?
Send us make, model and ECU/DCU version or upload the read file directly to TuningBot: we will tell you straight away whether AdBlue off is feasible.
